WASP-78 and Its Giant Planet

WASP-78 is a star located 2460 light-years away, and one planet orbits it. The star is 2.8 billion years old and has a mass of 1.39 solar masses, a radius of 2.35 solar radii, and a temperature of 6100 K. Its mass and radius are larger than the Sun's, and its temperature is hotter than the Sun's.

WASP-78 b is a Jupiter-like planet discovered by transit in 2012. A transit occurs when a planet passes in front of its star from our viewpoint, causing a small dip in observed brightness. The planet's radius of 21.6 Earth radii is larger than Earth's, and its radius exceeds four times Earth's, placing it in the Jupiter-like size class. Its orbital period is 2.18 days. WASP-78 b has a mass of 353 Earth masses, larger than Earth's, and a mean density of 0.192 g/cm³, 0.0348 times Earth's.
