WASP-55 b: A Jupiter-Like World

WASP-55 is a star 970 light-years away with one known planet. The host star is 3.05 billion years old and has a mass of 1.07 solar masses and a radius of 1.09 solar radii, both larger than the Sun's corresponding values, while its temperature of 6100 K is hotter than the Sun's.

The planet WASP-55 b is a Jupiter-like world, a size class that denotes a radius exceeding four times Earth's. It was discovered by transit in 2012. A transit occurs when a planet passes in front of its star from our viewpoint, causing a small dip in observed brightness. Its orbital period is 4.47 days. WASP-55 b has a mass of 186 Earth masses and a radius of 14.7 Earth radii, both larger than Earth's corresponding values. Its mean density is 0.321 g/cm³, which is 0.0583 times Earth's.
