WASP-5 b: A Jupiter-Like World Around a Sun-Like Star

WASP-5 is a G4 V star located 1010 light-years away. The spectral type indicates a Sun-like, main-sequence dwarf. The star has an age of 3.05 billion years, a mass of 0.972 solar masses, a radius of 1.03 solar radii, and a temperature of 5880 K. One planet orbits this host.

That planet is WASP-5 b, a Jupiter-like world discovered in 2008 by the transit method, in which a planet passes in front of its star from our viewpoint and causes a small dip in observed brightness. It completes an orbit every 1.63 days. Its radius is 12.2 Earth radii, which exceeds 4 times Earth's radius and accounts for its Jupiter-like classification. Its mass is 502 Earth masses, roughly 1.58 times Jupiter's mass, and its mean density is 1.53 g/cm³, 0.278 times Earth's.
