WASP-49: A Sun-Like Star and Its Roasting Giant

WASP-49 is a G6 V star located 635 light-years away. This spectral type marks a Sun-like main-sequence dwarf, though its temperature of 5600 K is cooler than the Sun's. The star has a mass of 0.938 solar masses and a radius of 0.976 solar radii, and it is 11.9 billion years old.

One planet is known to orbit this host. WASP-49 b is a Jupiter-like world discovered by the transit method in 2012, meaning it was found when it passed in front of its star and caused a small dip in observed brightness. The planet has a mass of 118 Earth masses and a radius of 12.4 Earth radii, both larger than Earth's corresponding values. Its mean density is 0.336 g/cm³, or 0.0611 times Earth's. WASP-49 b completes an orbit in 2.78 days.
