WASP-144: A Distant Star With One Known Planet

WASP-144 is a K2 V star located 1160 light-years away. The "V" in its spectral type marks it as a main-sequence dwarf, and the K class places it cooler than the Sun. Its reported mass estimate is 0.81 solar masses, its reported radius estimate is 0.81 solar radii, and its temperature is 5200 K. The star's age is 8.71 billion years. Both the mass and radius estimates are smaller than the Sun's, and its temperature is cooler than the Sun's.

One planet is known to orbit this host, WASP-144 b, discovered in 2018 by the transit method. A transit occurs when a planet passes in front of its star from our viewpoint, causing a small dip in observed brightness. WASP-144 b is a Jupiter-like planet, a size class for worlds exceeding 4 times Earth's radius, and its radius is 9.53 Earth radii, larger than Earth's. Its mass is 140 Earth masses, also larger than Earth's. Its mean density is 0.891 g/cm³, 0.162 times Earth's. The planet completes an orbit every 2.28 days.
