WASP-12 and Its Close-Orbiting Giant Planet

WASP-12 is a star located 1390 light-years away. The star's reported mass estimate is larger than the Sun's, at 1.43 solar masses, and its reported radius estimate is also larger than the Sun's, at 1.66 solar radii. Its reported temperature of 6360 K is hotter than the Sun's. One planet is known to orbit this host.

That planet is WASP-12 b, a Jupiter-like world discovered by the transit method in 2008. A transit occurs when a planet passes in front of its star from our viewpoint, causing a small dip in observed brightness; repeated dips help establish orbital periods. WASP-12 b completes an orbit every 1.09 days, and its reported radius estimate of 22 Earth radii is larger than Earth's.
