WASP-11 b: A Giant Planet Around a Cool Dwarf

WASP-11 is a K-type main-sequence star located 407 light-years away. It is cooler than the Sun at 4900 K and has a mass of 0.806 solar masses with a radius of 0.772 solar radii. The star is estimated to be 7.6 billion years old. One planet is known to orbit this host.

That planet, WASP-11 b, was discovered in 2008 by the transit method, in which a planet passes in front of its star from our viewpoint and causes a small dip in observed brightness. It orbits every 3.72 days. The planet has a mass of 251 Earth masses and a radius of 12.4 Earth radii, which places it in the Jupiter-like class of planets exceeding four times Earth's radius. Its mean density is 0.718 g/cm³, 0.13 times Earth's.
