TOI-5205 and Its Close-Orbiting Giant Planet

TOI-5205 is an M4.0 star located 282 light-years away. It is a small, cool red dwarf with 0.392 solar masses, 0.394 solar radii, and a temperature of 3430 K. All three of these reported estimates are smaller or cooler than the Sun's corresponding values. One known planet orbits this star.

That planet, TOI-5205 b, was discovered in 2023 by the transit method, in which a planet periodically dims its star as it passes in front of it from our viewpoint. It is classified as Jupiter-like, with a radius of 11.6 Earth radii, 1.08 times Jupiter's mass, and a mass of 343 Earth masses. Both its radius and mass are larger than Earth's. Its mean density is 1.21 g/cm³, 0.22 times Earth's. TOI-5205 b completes an orbit in just 1.63 days, making its year far shorter than any in our solar system.
