Kepler-989 b: A Super-Earth in a Distant System

Kepler-989 is a star located 1600 light-years away, with a single known planet in orbit around it. The star is 4.68 billion years old and has a mass of 0.82 solar masses, a radius of 0.78 solar radii, and a temperature of 5070 K. Its reported mass and radius estimates are smaller than the Sun's, and its reported temperature is cooler than the Sun's.

The system's only known planet, Kepler-989 b, was discovered in 2016 by the transit method, in which a planet passes in front of its star from our viewpoint and causes a small dip in observed brightness. It is classified as a Super-Earth, a size class that reaches 2.5 times Earth's radius. Kepler-989 b has a radius of 2.21 Earth radii, larger than Earth's, and orbits its star every 7.96 days.
