Kepler-970 b: A Neptune-Like World Around a Cool Star

Kepler-970 is a star 1080 light-years away with one known planet, Kepler-970 b. The host star is just 0.105 billion years old and has a mass of 0.67 solar masses, a radius of 0.71 solar radii, and a temperature of 4290 K. Its mass, radius, and temperature are all smaller or cooler than the Sun's.

Kepler-970 b was discovered in 2016 by the transit method, in which a planet passes in front of its star from our viewpoint and causes a small dip in observed brightness. Repeated dips help establish orbital periods. The planet completes one orbit every 16.7 days. With a radius of 2.61 Earth radii, it is larger than Earth and falls within the Neptune-like size class, which reaches four times Earth's radius.
