Kepler-855 b: A Distant Giant That Circles Its Star in Days

Kepler-855 is a single-star system 4910 light-years away, and its only known planet is Kepler-855 b. The host star holds 1.03 solar masses and spans 1.03 solar radii, with a temperature of 5840 K and an age of 4.17 billion years. Solar masses and radii compare stellar mass and radius with the Sun.

Kepler-855 b was discovered by the transit method, in which a planet crosses in front of its star from our viewpoint and causes a small dip in observed brightness. Repeated dips help establish orbital periods. The planet is classified as Jupiter-like, a size class that exceeds 4 times Earth's radius.

Its radius estimate is 8.35 Earth radii, larger than Earth's. Earth radii compare radius, not volume. Kepler-855 b completes an orbit in 7.89 days, and an orbital period is the time a planet takes to complete one orbit: its year.
