Kepler-83 and Its Three Planets

Kepler-83 is an M0 V star, a small, cool red dwarf, located 1310 light-years away. Its reported mass estimate is 0.58 solar masses, its reported radius estimate is 0.56 solar radii, and its reported temperature is 4080 K, all smaller or cooler than the Sun's corresponding values. The star is also estimated to be 3.09 billion years old. Three planets are known to orbit this host, all discovered by the transit method, in which a planet passes in front of its star from our viewpoint and causes a small dip in observed brightness.

Kepler-83 b was discovered in 2012 and is a Neptune-like planet with an orbital period of 9.77 days and a radius of 2.83 Earth radii, larger than Earth's. Kepler-83 c, also found in 2012, is a Super-Earth with an orbital period of 20.1 days and a radius of 2.36 Earth radii, likewise larger than Earth's. Kepler-83 d, discovered in 2014, is a Super-Earth with an orbital period of 5.17 days and a radius of 1.94 Earth radii, also larger than Earth's.

Among the listed planets, Kepler-83 d has the shortest year by reported estimates, at 5.17 days, while Kepler-83 c has the longest, at 20.1 days. Kepler-83 b has the second-shortest year, at 9.77 days. In radius, Kepler-83 d has the smallest by reported estimates, at 1.94 Earth radii; Kepler-83 b has the largest, at 2.83 Earth radii; and Kepler-83 c has the second-smallest, at 2.36 Earth radii.
