Kepler-684 and Its Neptune-Like Planet

Kepler-684 is a star 5650 light-years away with one known planet. The host star is 4.37 billion years old and has a mass of 0.89 solar masses, a radius of 0.86 solar radii, and a temperature of 5490 K. Its reported mass estimate is smaller than the Sun’s, its reported radius estimate is smaller than the Sun’s, and its reported temperature is cooler than the Sun’s.

The planet Kepler-684 b was discovered in 2016 by the transit method, in which a planet passes in front of its star from our viewpoint and causes a small dip in observed brightness. Repeated dips help establish orbital periods. Kepler-684 b completes an orbit every 6.77 days, and its radius of 3.36 Earth radii is larger than Earth’s. It is classified as Neptune-like, a size class for planets reaching up to 4 times Earth's radius.
