Kepler-551 and Its Neptune-Like Planet

Kepler-551 is a star located 1010 light-years away. It is 3.8 billion years old and has a mass of 0.65 solar masses and a radius of 0.63 solar radii, making both its reported mass and radius estimates smaller than the Sun's. Its temperature is 4290 K, cooler than the Sun's. One known planet orbits this star.

Kepler-551 b was discovered in 2016 by the transit method, in which a planet passes in front of its star from our viewpoint and causes a small dip in observed brightness. Repeated dips help establish orbital periods. The planet completes an orbit every 12.4 days and has a radius of 2.73 Earth radii, larger than Earth's. That radius places it among Neptune-like planets, a size class reaching four times Earth's radius.
