Kepler-414 and Its Two Planets

Kepler-414 is a star located 1350 light-years away. It is 5.5 billion years old and has a mass of 0.95 solar masses, a radius of 0.94 solar radii, and a temperature of 5580 K. Its reported mass estimate is smaller than the Sun's, and its reported temperature is cooler than the Sun's. Two planets are known to orbit Kepler-414.

Both planets were discovered in 2014 by the transit method, in which a planet passes in front of its star from our viewpoint and causes a small dip in observed brightness. Repeated dips help establish orbital periods.

Kepler-414 b is a Super-Earth with a radius of 1.71 Earth radii and a mass of 3.5 Earth masses. Its orbital period is 4.7 days. Its mean density is 3.86 g/cm³, 0.7 times Earth's.

Kepler-414 c is a Neptune-like planet with a radius of 3.01 Earth radii and a mass of 29.9 Earth masses. Its orbital period is 7.17 days. Its mean density is 6.04 g/cm³, 1.1 times Earth's.

The two planets differ clearly in size and mass. Kepler-414 b is the smaller and less massive of the pair, while Kepler-414 c is the larger and more massive. Their orbital periods are also distinct: Kepler-414 b completes one orbit in 4.7 days, the shorter of the two, while Kepler-414 c takes 7.17 days. Both planets have radii larger than Earth's.
