Kepler-34 b: A Circumbinary Giant in a Two-Star System

Kepler-34 is a binary star system 5870 light-years away. Its host star has a mass of 1.05 solar masses, a radius of 1.16 solar radii, and a temperature of 5910 K - each estimate exceeding the Sun's corresponding value. One planet is known to orbit this host.

Kepler-34 b is a Jupiter-like circumbinary planet, meaning it orbits both stars of the binary system rather than one star alone. Discovered by transit in 2011, it has a radius of 8.56 Earth radii and a mass of 69.9 Earth masses, both larger than Earth's corresponding values. Its orbital period is 289 days, and its mean density is 0.613 g/cm³, 0.111 times Earth's.
