Kepler-316: A Red Dwarf With Two Close-Orbiting Worlds

Kepler-316 is a star located 1,260 light-years away, and it hosts two known planets: Kepler-316 b and Kepler-316 c. Both were discovered in 2014 using the transit method, in which a planet passes in front of its star from our viewpoint and causes a small dip in observed brightness. Repeated dips help establish orbital periods.

The star itself is estimated to be 3.31 billion years old, with a mass of 0.62 solar masses and a radius of 0.6 solar radii. Its reported temperature is 4,270 K. Each of these stellar measurements is smaller or cooler than the corresponding value for the Sun.

Kepler-316 b is an Earth-like planet with a radius of 1.06 Earth radii and an orbital period of 2.24 days. Kepler-316 c is also Earth-like, with a radius of 1.16 Earth radii and an orbital period of 6.83 days. Among the listed planets, Kepler-316 b has the shortest year and the smallest radius, while Kepler-316 c has the longest year and the largest radius. Kepler-316 c's radius is larger than Earth's.
