Kepler-259: A Distant Star With Two Neptune-Like Planets

Kepler-259 is a star located 3270 light-years away. It has 0.93 solar masses, 0.9 solar radii, an age of 4.47 billion years, and a temperature of 5580 K. Its reported mass estimate is smaller than the Sun's, and its reported temperature is cooler than the Sun's. Two planets are known to orbit this host.

Both planets were discovered by transit in 2014. A transit occurs when a planet passes in front of its star from our viewpoint, causing a small dip in observed brightness. Kepler-259 b is a Neptune-like planet with an orbital period of 8.12 days and a radius of 2.8 Earth radii. Kepler-259 c is also Neptune-like, with an orbital period of 36.9 days and a radius of 2.7 Earth radii. Each planet's reported radius estimate is larger than Earth's. Among the listed planets, Kepler-259 b has the shortest year and the largest radius by reported estimates, while Kepler-259 c has the longest year and the smallest radius by reported estimates.
