Kepler-22 and Its Super-Earth

Kepler-22 is a G5 V star located 635 light-years away. It is a Sun-like star with a reported mass of 0.97 solar masses and a reported radius estimate of 0.979 solar radii, smaller than the Sun's. Its reported temperature of 5520 K is cooler than the Sun's. One known planet orbits this star.

That planet is Kepler-22 b, a Super-Earth discovered in 2011 by the transit method, in which a planet passes in front of its star from our viewpoint and causes a small dip in observed brightness. Repeated dips help establish orbital periods. Kepler-22 b has a reported upper limit of 9.1 Earth masses. Its reported radius estimate is 2.1 Earth radii, larger than Earth's. Size classes compare radius with Earth's, and a Super-Earth reaches 2.5 times Earth's radius. Kepler-22 b completes one orbit in 290 days.
