Kepler-1822 b: A Neptune-Like World Orbiting a Cooler, Smaller Star

Kepler-1822 is a star located 2930 light-years from Earth. It has a reported mass of 0.759 solar masses, a radius of 0.692 solar radii, and a temperature of 5180 K. Each of these measurements is smaller than the corresponding value for the Sun. One planet orbits this host: Kepler-1822 b.

Kepler-1822 b was discovered in 2021 by the transit method, which detects the small dip in a star's brightness when a planet passes in front of it. Repeated dips help establish the planet's orbital period, which is 22.1 days. Its radius is 2.65 Earth radii, making it larger than Earth. With a radius between 2.5 and 4 times Earth's, the planet falls into the Neptune-like size class, which describes its radius rather than its composition.
