Kepler-1721 b: A Neptune-like World in a Distant System

Kepler-1721 is a star located 2090 light-years away, with a mass of 0.889 solar masses and a radius of 0.799 solar radii. Its reported mass estimate is smaller than the Sun's, and its temperature of 5360 K is cooler than the Sun's. One planet orbits this host.

That planet is Kepler-1721 b, a Neptune-like world discovered in 2021 by the transit method, in which a planet passes in front of its star from our viewpoint and causes a small dip in observed brightness. Repeated dips help establish orbital periods. Kepler-1721 b completes an orbit every 4.59 days and has a radius of 3.12 Earth radii, a figure larger than Earth's radius. This size falls within the Neptune-like class, which extends to 4 times Earth's radius.
