Kepler-17: A Sun-Like Star and Its Close-Orbiting Giant

Kepler-17 is a G2 V star, a Sun-like main-sequence dwarf, located 2350 light-years away. It has one known planet. The star's reported mass estimate is 1.16 solar masses and its reported radius estimate is 1.05 solar radii, both larger than the Sun's. Its temperature is 5780 K, and its age is a reported upper limit of 1.78 billion years.

The planet Kepler-17 b was discovered by transit in 2011. It is a Jupiter-like planet, a size class for worlds whose radius exceeds four times Earth's. Its radius is 14.7 Earth radii, larger than Earth's. Its mass is 779 Earth masses, also larger than Earth's, and roughly 2.45 times Jupiter's mass. Its mean density is 1.36 g/cm³, 0.246 times Earth's. Kepler-17 b orbits with an orbital period of 1.49 days.
