Kepler-1601 b: A Sub-Earth in a Close Orbit

Kepler-1601 is a star 2100 light-years away with one known planet. The star is 4.27 billion years old and has a mass of 1.04 solar masses, a radius of 1.07 solar radii, and a temperature of 5870 K. Solar masses and radii compare stellar mass and radius with the Sun.

The planet, Kepler-1601 b, is a Sub-Earth, a size class for planets smaller than Earth in radius. It was discovered in 2016 by the transit method, in which a planet passing in front of its star from our viewpoint causes a small dip in observed brightness. Kepler-1601 b has a radius of 0.82 Earth radii - a measure of size, not volume - and an orbital period of 2.21 days, the time it takes to complete one orbit.
