Kepler-1403: A Distant Star and Its Super-Earth

Kepler-1403 is a star 7060 light-years away, and one planet orbits it. The star is 3.31 billion years old, with a mass of 1.11 solar masses and a radius of 1.15 solar radii. Its temperature is 6060 K, hotter than the Sun's, and both its reported mass and radius estimates are larger than the Sun's.

The planet Kepler-1403 b was discovered by transit in 2016. A transit occurs when a planet passes in front of its star from our viewpoint, causing a small dip in observed brightness; repeated dips help establish orbital periods. Kepler-1403 b completes an orbit every 5.19 days and has a radius of 2.14 Earth radii, larger than Earth's. As a Super-Earth, it falls within the size class that reaches 2.5 times Earth's radius, a classification based on radius rather than composition.
