Kepler-1278 b: A Single Earth-Sized World in a Distant System

Kepler-1278 is a star located 2,900 light-years away. It has one planet. The star's reported mass estimate is 1.11 solar masses, larger than the Sun's, and its reported radius estimate is 1.16 solar radii, also larger than the Sun's. Its temperature is 6,070 K, hotter than the Sun's, and its age is 3.31 billion years.

The planet Kepler-1278 b was discovered in 2016 by the transit method, in which a planet passes in front of its star from our viewpoint, causing a small dip in observed brightness that repeats with each orbit. Kepler-1278 b is classified as Earth-like, a size class that stays within 1.5 times Earth's radius. It has a radius of 1.01 Earth radii and an orbital period of 3.24 days, the time it takes to complete one orbit, which is its year.
