Kepler-113: A Cool, Older Star with Two Super-Earths

Kepler-113 is a star located 856 light-years away. It has an age of 6.89 billion years, a mass of 0.75 solar masses, a radius of 0.69 solar radii, and a temperature of 4730 K. Its reported mass and radius estimates are smaller than the Sun's, and its reported temperature is cooler than the Sun's. Two planets are known to orbit this host.

Both planets were discovered by transit in 2014, and both are classified as Super-Earths. A transit occurs when a planet passes in front of its star from our viewpoint, causing a small dip in observed brightness. Repeated dips help establish orbital periods.

Kepler-113 b has a mass of 11.7 Earth masses and a radius of 1.82 Earth radii. Its mean density is 10.7 g/cm³, 1.94 times Earth's. Its reported radius and mass estimates are larger than Earth's, and its orbital period is 4.75 days. Among the listed planets, Kepler-113 b has the shortest year and the smallest radius by reported estimates.

Kepler-113 c has a reported upper limit of 8.7 Earth masses, a radius of 2.18 Earth radii, and an orbital period of 8.93 days. Its reported radius estimate is larger than Earth's. Among the listed planets, Kepler-113 c has the longest year and the largest radius by reported estimates. An upper limit is a reported bound, not an exact value.
