Kepler-1071 b: A Super-Earth in a Distant System

Kepler-1071 is a star located 3400 light-years away, and it hosts one known planet. The star is 4.27 billion years old and has a mass of 0.86 solar masses, a radius of 0.81 solar radii, and a temperature of 5220 K. Its reported mass and radius estimates are smaller than the Sun's, and its reported temperature is cooler than the Sun's.

The planet, Kepler-1071 b, is classified as a Super-Earth. This means its radius reaches up to 2.5 times Earth's radius, a size class that compares radius rather than composition. Kepler-1071 b has a radius of 2.38 Earth radii, larger than Earth's. It completes an orbit every 6.18 days. The planet was discovered in 2016 by the transit method, in which a planet passes in front of its star from our viewpoint, causing a small dip in observed brightness. Repeated dips help establish orbital periods.
