Kepler-1647 b: A Circumbinary Giant in a Distant Binary System

Kepler-1647 is a binary star system located 3,950 light-years away. The host star has a mass of 1.22 solar masses, a radius of 1.79 solar radii, a temperature of 6210 K, and an age of 4.4 billion years. Its reported mass, radius, and temperature estimates are all larger or hotter than the Sun's. One planet orbits this host.

That planet is Kepler-1647 b, a Jupiter-like world discovered in 2016 by the transit method. It is circumbinary, meaning it orbits both stars of the binary system rather than one star alone. Kepler-1647 b has a mass of 483 Earth masses and a radius of 11.9 Earth radii, both larger than Earth's. Its mean density is 1.59 g/cm³, 0.289 times Earth's. The planet completes an orbit every 1110 days.
