Kapteyn: A Nearby Red Dwarf and Its Known Planet

Kapteyn is an M0 V star, a small, cool red dwarf, located 12.8 light-years away. Its measured mass is 0.279 solar masses and its radius is 0.302 solar radii, both smaller than the Sun's. The star's temperature is 3740 K, cooler than the Sun's.

One planet orbits Kapteyn. Kapteyn c was discovered in 2014 using the radial velocity method, which tracks the wobble a planet's gravity induces in its star's motion; repeated wobbles reveal the planet and its orbital period. Kapteyn c has a minimum mass of 7 Earth masses, larger than Earth's, and an orbital period of 122 days.
