KOI-4978 b: A Sub-Earth

KOI-4978 is a Sun-like star 3050 light-years away. Its spectral type is G, and it has one known planet. The star is 1.48 billion years old, has a mass of 0.967 solar masses, a radius of 0.863 solar radii, and a temperature of 5550 K. The star's reported mass, radius, and temperature estimates are smaller or cooler than the Sun's corresponding values.

The planet, KOI-4978 b, was discovered in 2024 by the transit method, in which a planet passes in front of its star from our viewpoint and causes a small dip in observed brightness. Repeated dips help establish orbital periods, and KOI-4978 b completes one orbit in 0.942 days. Its radius is 0.7 Earth radii, smaller than Earth's. That places it in the Sub-Earth size class, which compares radius with Earth's: a Sub-Earth is smaller than Earth.
