KOI-1783: A Distant Star With Two Jupiter-Like Worlds

KOI-1783 is a star 2820 light-years away with two known planets. The star is 4.07 billion years old and has a mass of 1.08 solar masses, a radius of 1.14 solar radii, and a temperature of 5920 K. Its mass and radius are larger than the Sun's, and its temperature is hotter than the Sun's.

Both planets are Jupiter-like, meaning their radii exceed 4 times Earth's radius. Both were discovered by transit, in which a planet passes in front of its star from our viewpoint and causes a small dip in observed brightness.

KOI-1783.01 has a mass of 71 Earth masses and a radius of 8.86 Earth radii, completing an orbit in 134 days. Its mean density is 0.562 g/cm³, 0.102 times Earth's. KOI-1783.02 has a mass of 15 Earth masses and a radius of 5.44 Earth radii, with an orbital period of 284 days. Its mean density is 0.513 g/cm³, 0.0932 times Earth's.

Both planets' reported radius and mass estimates are larger than Earth's. Among the listed planets, KOI-1783.01 has the shortest year, at 134 days, and the largest radius, at 8.86 Earth radii, as well as the largest reported mass, at 71 Earth masses. KOI-1783.02 has the longest year, at 284 days, and the smallest radius, at 5.44 Earth radii, as well as the smallest reported mass, at 15 Earth masses.
