KOI-134: A Distant Star With Two Known Planets

KOI-134 is a star 3780 light-years away with two known planets orbiting it. Its spectral type is F9V, marking it as a main-sequence dwarf hotter than the Sun. The star's reported mass estimate is 1.41 solar masses, its reported radius estimate is 1.67 solar radii, and its reported temperature is 6160 K. Each of these estimates is larger or hotter than the corresponding value for the Sun.

The first planet, KOI-134 b, is classified as Jupiter-like, a size class for planets exceeding 4 times Earth's radius. It was found by the transit method, in which a planet passing in front of its star from our viewpoint causes a small dip in observed brightness. Its reported radius estimate is 12 Earth radii and its reported mass estimate is 346 Earth masses, both larger than Earth's corresponding values. That mass is roughly 1.09 times Jupiter's mass, and the planet's mean density is 1.09 g/cm³, 0.199 times Earth's. KOI-134 b completes an orbit, or year, in 67.1 days.

The second planet, KOI-134 c, was found through transit timing variations. Its reported mass estimate is 69.9 Earth masses, larger than Earth's, and its year lasts 34 days.

Among the listed planets, KOI-134 b has the longest year and the largest reported mass, at 346 Earth masses. KOI-134 c has the shortest year and the smallest reported mass, at 69.9 Earth masses.
