K2-74 b: A Transiting Super-Earth

K2-74 is a star 1230 light-years away with one known planet. The star has a mass of 0.987 solar masses, a radius of 1.09 solar radii, and a temperature of 5930 K, which is hotter than the Sun's reported temperature.

The planet K2-74 b was discovered in 2016 by the transit method, in which a planet passes in front of its star from our viewpoint and causes a small dip in observed brightness. Repeated dips help establish orbital periods. K2-74 b completes one orbit every 19.6 days. Its radius is 2.31 Earth radii, larger than Earth's. That radius places it in the Super-Earth size class, which reaches 2.5 times Earth's radius; such classes compare radius, not composition.
