K2-54 b: A Neptune-Like World Orbiting a Cool Dwarf Star

K2-54 is a star located 571 light-years away, and it hosts one known planet. The star has a reported mass estimate of 0.615 solar masses, a radius estimate of 0.643 solar radii, and a temperature of 3990 K. All three of these values are smaller or cooler than the Sun's corresponding values.

The sole planet in this system is K2-54 b, a Neptune-like world discovered by the transit method in 2016. A transit occurs when a planet passes in front of its star from our viewpoint, causing a small dip in observed brightness; repeated dips help establish orbital periods. K2-54 b completes an orbit every 9.78 days. Its radius estimate is 2.61 Earth radii, which is larger than Earth's. In size classification, a Neptune-like planet reaches up to four times Earth's radius, and K2-54 b falls within that range.
