K2-29 b: A Closely Orbiting Giant Around a Cool Dwarf

K2-29 is a K1 V star 582 light-years away. The K-type dwarf is cooler and less massive and smaller than the Sun, with a temperature of 5220 K, a mass of 0.864 solar masses, and a radius of 0.748 solar radii. It is 2.6 billion years old. One planet is known to orbit this host.

That planet, K2-29 b, was discovered in 2016 by the transit method, in which a planet passes in front of its star and causes a small dip in observed brightness. Its orbit is tight, taking 3.26 days to complete. The planet is a Jupiter-like world, with a radius of 13.3 Earth radii and a mass of 232 Earth masses. K2-29 b is larger and more massive than Earth, and its mean density is 0.539 g/cm³, 0.0978 times Earth's.
