K2-281 b: A Distant Jupiter-Like World

K2-281 is a star located 1490 light-years away, and it hosts one known planet. The star has a reported mass of 0.71 solar masses, a radius of 0.856 solar radii, and a temperature of 4500 K. Each of these measurements is smaller or cooler than the Sun's corresponding value.

The planet K2-281 b was discovered by the transit method and announced in 2018. A transit occurs when a planet passes in front of its star from our viewpoint, dimming the light we see slightly. With a radius of 8.18 Earth radii, K2-281 b is larger than Earth. Its size class, Jupiter-like, indicates that its radius exceeds 4 times Earth's radius.

K2-281 b orbits its star every 8.69 days, giving it a short orbital period. That is the full span of its year.
