K2-246 is a star located 2290 light-years from Earth. It has a mass of 0.97 solar masses and a radius of 0.934 solar radii, making it slightly smaller than the Sun in both respects. Its temperature of 5510 K is also cooler than the Sun's. One planet orbits this host.
That planet, K2-246 b, is a Neptune-like world discovered by the transit method in 2018. During a transit, a planet passes in front of its star from our viewpoint, causing a small dip in observed brightness; repeated dips help establish orbital periods. K2-246 b completes one orbit every 5.77 days and has a radius of 3.49 Earth radii, larger than Earth's. In size classification, a Neptune-like planet reaches up to four times Earth's radius.
