K2-231 b: A Neptune-like Planet in a Distant System

K2-231 is a star located 1050 light-years away with one known planet. The host star is estimated to be 3 billion years old, with a mass of 1.01 solar masses and a radius of 0.95 solar radii. Its reported radius estimate is smaller than the Sun's, and its temperature of 5700 K is cooler than the Sun's.

The planet K2-231 b is classified as Neptune-like and was discovered in 2018 using the transit method, in which a planet passes in front of its star from our viewpoint and causes a small dip in observed brightness. K2-231 b has an orbital period of 13.8 days and a radius of 2.5 Earth radii, which is larger than Earth's. Its size classification places it at the upper boundary of the Super-Earth range and within the Neptune-like range, based on radius rather than composition.
