HIP 90988 b: A Massive Planet Orbiting a Cool Giant

HIP 90988 is a K1 III star located 307 light-years away. The star has a measured age of 4.55 billion years, a mass of 1.3 solar masses, and a radius of 3.94 solar radii, with a temperature of 4880 K. Its reported mass and radius estimates are larger than the Sun's, while its reported temperature is cooler.

One planet is known to orbit this host. HIP 90988 b was discovered in 2021 by the radial velocity method, which measures the wobble a planet's gravity induces in its star's motion. The planet has a minimum mass of 668 Earth masses and an orbital period of 456 days. Its minimum mass is larger than Earth's and roughly 2.1 times Jupiter's mass.
