HD 87646: A Sun-Like Star and Its Massive Planet

HD 87646 is a G-type star located 240 light-years away. A spectral type such as G classifies a star by its temperature class, and a G-type star is Sun-like. The star has a reported mass of 1.12 solar masses, a radius of 1.55 solar radii, and a temperature of 5770 K. Its mass estimate is larger than the Sun's, and its radius estimate is also larger than the Sun's.

One planet orbits this star: HD 87646 b. It was discovered in 2016 using the radial velocity method, which measures the wobble a planet's gravity induces in its star's motion; repeated wobbles reveal the planet and its orbital period. HD 87646 b has a minimum mass of 3940 Earth masses and an orbital period of 13.5 days. A minimum mass is a lower bound on the planet's true mass, and this minimum mass is larger than Earth's and roughly 12.4 times Jupiter's mass.
