HD 62509 and Its Planet

HD 62509 is a K-type giant star with a spectral type of K0 III. It has an age of 0.98 billion years, a mass of 2.1 solar masses, a radius of 8.31 solar radii, and a temperature of 4950 K. Its reported mass and radius estimates are larger than the Sun’s, while its reported temperature is cooler than the Sun’s. One planet orbits this host.

HD 62509 b was discovered in 2006 by the radial velocity method, which measures the wobble a planet’s gravity induces in its star’s motion; repeated wobbles reveal the planet and its orbital period. The planet has a minimum mass of 731 Earth masses, a lower bound on its true mass, and an orbital period of 590 days. Its minimum mass is larger than Earth’s and roughly 2.3 times Jupiter’s mass.
