HD 217786 and Its Two Known Planets

HD 217786 is a binary star system 181 light-years away. The host star is an F8 V dwarf with an age of 7.6 billion years, a mass of 1.02 solar masses, and a radius of 1.27 solar radii. Its temperature of 5970 K is hotter than the Sun's, and its reported radius estimate is larger than the Sun's. Two planets have been found orbiting this star.

The first, HD 217786 b, was discovered in 2011 by the radial velocity method, which detects the wobble a planet's gravity induces in its star's motion. It has a mass of 4400 Earth masses - roughly 13.9 times Jupiter's mass - and an orbital period of 1300 days, the longest among the listed planets.

HD 217786 c was discovered in 2022, also by radial velocity. Its minimum mass is 7.31 Earth masses, a lower bound on its true mass rather than a direct estimate. It completes an orbit in 2.52 days, the shortest period among the listed planets.
