HD 19615 b: A Massive Planet Orbiting a Cool Giant Star

HD 19615 is a K0 star located 865 light-years from Earth, with a single known planet in orbit around it. The star is 6.7 billion years old and holds 1.1 solar masses, but its radius extends to 32.3 solar radii, far larger than the Sun's. Its temperature of 4260 K is also cooler than the Sun's.

The planet, HD 19615 b, was discovered in 2022 using the radial velocity method, which detects the wobble a planet's gravity induces in its star's motion. Repeated wobbles reveal the planet and its orbital period. HD 19615 b completes one orbit in 402 days.

Its minimum mass is 2700 Earth masses, a lower bound on the planet's true mass. This minimum mass is larger than Earth's and roughly 8.5 times Jupiter's mass.
