HD 179949 and Its Planet

HD 179949 is a star 89.6 light-years from Earth with one known planet. Its spectral type, F8V, marks it as a main-sequence dwarf hotter and more massive than the Sun. The star's reported mass estimate is 1.18 solar masses, larger than the Sun's, and its reported radius estimate is 1.22 solar radii, also larger than the Sun's. Its temperature of 6170 K is hotter than the Sun's, and its age is 2.56 billion years.

The one planet orbiting this star is HD 179949 b, discovered in 2000 by the radial velocity method, which detects the wobble a planet's gravity induces in its star's motion. Its minimum mass is 291 Earth masses, a lower bound on its true mass and larger than Earth's, and it completes an orbit in 3.09 days.
