HD 117618 and Its Lone Known Planet

HD 117618 is a Sun-like star of spectral type G2 V, located 123 light-years away. It is one of the single known planet hosts of its kind, with its planetary companion announced in 2004. The star is estimated to be 6 billion years old, holds 1.05 solar masses, and has a radius of 1.18 solar radii. Its temperature of 5900 K is hotter than the Sun's, just as its reported radius estimate is larger than the Sun's.

The one known planet is HD 117618 b, discovered by the radial velocity method, which detects the wobble a planet's gravity induces in its star's motion. Repeated wobbles reveal both the planet and its orbital period. HD 117618 b has a minimum mass of 55.3 Earth masses, a lower bound on its true mass and larger than Earth's, and it completes an orbit in 25.8 days.
