HATS-8 and Its Planet

HATS-8 is a star 2590 light-years away with a mass of 1.06 solar masses and a radius of 1.09 solar radii. Its reported mass and radius estimates are larger than the Sun's. The star is 5.1 billion years old and has a temperature of 5680 K, cooler than the Sun's. One planet is known to orbit it.

That planet, HATS-8 b, was discovered in 2015 by the transit method, in which a planet passes in front of its star from our viewpoint and causes a small dip in observed brightness. It is a Jupiter-like planet, a size class for worlds exceeding 4 times Earth's radius. Its radius is 9.79 Earth radii, larger than Earth's. Its mass is 43.9 Earth masses, also larger than Earth's. Its mean density is 0.258 g/cm³, 0.0468 times Earth's. HATS-8 b completes one orbit every 3.58 days.
