HATS-42 and Its One Known Planet

HATS-42 is a star located 2610 light-years away. It hosts one known planet. The star's reported mass estimate is 1.27 solar masses, and its reported radius estimate is 1.48 solar radii, both larger than the Sun's. Its reported temperature is 6060 K, hotter than the Sun's, and it is estimated to be 3.26 billion years old.

The planet HATS-42 b was discovered in 2018 by the transit method, in which a planet passes in front of its star from our viewpoint and causes a small dip in observed brightness. It is classified as Jupiter-like, meaning its radius exceeds 4 times Earth's radius. Its radius is 15.7 Earth radii, larger than Earth's. Its mass is 598 Earth masses, also larger than Earth's and roughly 1.88 times Jupiter's mass, and its orbital period is 2.29 days. Its mean density is 0.852 g/cm³, 0.155 times Earth's.
