HATS-1 b: A Transiting Giant Planet

HATS-1 is a star located 926 light-years away. It has a mass of 0.986 solar masses, a radius of 1.04 solar radii, and a temperature of 5870 K. One planet orbits this host.

That planet is HATS-1 b, a Jupiter-like world discovered by transit in 2012. Transit detection works when a planet crosses in front of its star from our viewpoint, dimming the observed brightness slightly; repeated dips help establish the orbital period. HATS-1 b completes one orbit every 3.45 days. With a radius of 14.6 Earth radii, it is a Jupiter-like planet, a size class that exceeds 4 times Earth's radius. Its radius estimate is larger than Earth's. The planet's mass estimate is 590 Earth masses, roughly 1.86 times Jupiter's mass, and larger than Earth's. Its mean density is 1.05 g/cm³, 0.19 times Earth's.
