HAT-P-68 b: A Jupiter-like World

HAT-P-68 is a K-type star located 659 light-years away, with one known planet in orbit. The star's reported mass estimate is 0.679 solar masses and its radius estimate is 0.67 solar radii, both smaller than the Sun's. Its temperature of 4510 K is cooler than the Sun's. The star's age is 11.1 billion years.

The host star's lone planet is HAT-P-68 b, a Jupiter-like world discovered by transit in 2020. A transit occurs when a planet passes in front of its star from our viewpoint, causing a small dip in observed brightness; repeated dips help establish orbital periods. HAT-P-68 b orbits every 2.3 days. Its mass estimate is 230 Earth masses and its radius estimate is 12 Earth radii, both larger than Earth's. The planet's mean density is 0.731 g/cm³, 0.133 times Earth's.
