HAT-P-53 b: A Giant World

HAT-P-53 is a star 2170 light-years away with one known planet. The host star has a mass of 1.09 solar masses, a radius of 1.21 solar radii, and a temperature of 5960 K, and it is 4.67 billion years old. Its reported mass and radius estimates are larger than the Sun's, and its reported temperature is hotter than the Sun's.

The planet HAT-P-53 b was discovered by transit in 2015. A transit occurs when a planet passes in front of its star from our viewpoint, producing a small dip in observed brightness; repeated dips help establish orbital periods. HAT-P-53 b is Jupiter-like, a size class for planets exceeding 4 times Earth's radius. It completes an orbit in 1.96 days. Its radius is 14.8 Earth radii, and its mass estimate is 472 Earth masses, roughly 1.48 times Jupiter's mass. The planet's mean density is 0.806 g/cm³, 0.146 times Earth's.
